NDIS Eligibility – Can You Access the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to Australians with permanent and significant disabilities to help them live independently and achieve their goals. It offers a wide range of supports, from daily living assistance to community participation and supported independent living.

At Sena Care, we are a registered NDIS provider in Sydney, helping participants and families understand the scheme and access the supports they need.

If you’re wondering whether you or a loved one can receive NDIS funding, here’s a simple guide to eligibility.

NDIS Eligibility Criteria

Age Requirements

  • You must be under 65 years old when applying.

  • If you are over 65, you may instead be eligible for aged care support services.

Residency Requirements

  • You must live in Australia.

  • You must be:

    • An Australian citizen, OR

    • A Permanent Visa holder, OR

    • Hold a Protected Special Category Visa.

Disability Requirements

Your disability must be:

  • Permanent – likely to be lifelong.

  • Significant – it affects your ability to take part in everyday activities.

  • Requiring support – you need assistance now, and possibly into the future, to reduce the impact of your disability.

Early Intervention Access

You may also be eligible if:

  • You or your child have a developmental delay or disability that would benefit from early supports.

  • Early intervention will reduce future needs for long-term care.

Eligibility Self-Check Questions

If you’re unsure whether you qualify, ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I under 65 years old?

  • Am I an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected SCV holder?

  • Do I have a permanent and significant disability?

  • Does my disability affect my ability to work, study, or participate in the community?

  • Do I need ongoing supports such as personal care, transport, or assistive technology?

  • Would early intervention services help reduce the future impact of my disability?

If you answered yes to most of these questions, you may be eligible for the NDIS.

How to Apply for the NDIS

  • Check your eligibility using the questions above.

  • Make an Access Request by contacting the NDIA (National Disability Insurance Agency).

  • Provide supporting documents such as medical reports, assessments, or specialist letters.

  • Wait for your eligibility decision and, if approved, work with a planner to create your NDIS plan.
